About This Route
This route starts in Huay Hia (ห้วยเฮี๊ยะ), a village about 12km north of popular Ban Jabo (บ้านจ่าโบ่), off the main Mae Hong Son Loop road. I stayed at a basic, low-cost homestay (หนูหง่าโฮมสเตย์ Homestay Nunga) for 600 Baht. The views of the mountains from the homestay are some of the best I've seen in Thailand.
The guy from the Homestay mentioned a trail to a "Garden of Rocks" going through these mountains. I used had to Google Maps Satellite to find a path leading into the mountains.
The first half of the ride is dirt. In July, the track was wet and muddy with some steep sections. While it wasn't an enduro ride, the conditions made it an intermediate challenge. Bright green grass and impressive mountains made it a great ride nonetheless. Once through the dirt section, the road becomes paved again as you enter the Garden of Rocks, a unique area with hills covered in rocks and greenery.
The loop finishes by reconnecting with the road back to the village.
There is only one restaurant/cafe in the area (กิกอคอ คอฟฟี่ kikokor coffee). It seems to be the only food option of the village and it closes early, so plan ahead.
Note: You can follow the track counter-clockwise to reach the garden of rocks without any off-roading!
